Thursday 20th July - bike **** Alton Waterr Curcuit - sunny periods and
showers ? top clouds too .
We are taking small steps to get Mags confidence back on her bike so wanted
somewhere safe for a cycle so headed over to Alton Water to do a circuit of
the reservoir befoe the schools break up for the summer holidays. We had
time to do ou exercises before packing a picnic lunch leaving Felixstowe at
10.15, stopping along The Strand by the River Orwell to take a few pic of
the bridge, loads of swans too. We park at the end of the deadend lane in
Sutton just past the entrance to Alton Water. It is just a short way to the
cycle path by the fields the highland cattle were, sadly they were not
about today and instead of turning right towards the sailing centre we went
the other way. The weather was good, light breezes with sunny periods but
with some dark menacing clouds but we only got a brief speel of rain. The
path meanders around the many inlets and is surprisingly hilly in places,
we stop at a couple of bid hides but not that much about, we spot nesting
Turns, loads of gull, a couple of herons, a sandpiper, a grebe, loads of
Egyptian geese, swans and an egret so not too bad! It was nice and quiet
too, just the odd cyclist and dog walker. We cross Lemons Hill bridge
before returning to the path and find a lovely spot on a small beach
opposite the sailing cente for our picnic which is when we see the
sandpiper:) With some really dark clouds approaching we decide to continue,
there are kids on the wate learning to windsurf and dinghy sail, great to
see too. Then just short of the draw off towe I get yet another flat tyre!
We check the tyre and find three little thorns which we remove but the
holes ae too big fo the Slime to repair sadly. Luckily I cay a couple of
spare innertubes so I take the back wheel off and replace it, then disaste
strikes as I pump it up, the innetube suddenly pops out of the tyre,
massive and goes off with a big bang!!!! That made both of us jump meaning
we had to walk the last bit. We crossed the dam with loads of Egyptan geese
on the wall, past the new fenced off swimming area to the sailing cente
whee I washed my hands before sitting at a picnic bench fo a cuppa and wee
entertained by the kids leaning to windsuf:) Then the last bit back to the
van, we had to walk just ove a mile and a half so not too bad and it did
not spoil our day! I got some nice pics of the dark skies but sadly they
were not chosen fo the TV weather, ITV?s About Anglia was the only one on,
Look East must be on strike?
